Unitrans

Unitrans is the bus system that is used for the University Campus as well as the city of Davis. It is well known for its signature red color as well as the fact that it services a few London buses on the bus lines. As a Marketing and Design Assistant, I help with designing schedule posters, company newsletters, stickers, and social media content.

Brief/Context:

For this project, I was asked to come up with a new design for the cover of the bus schedule booklets that are used on the buses and around Davis. I was super excited that I got to take on this project especially because my manager gave me a lot of space to use my own ideas and learn new skills. The main brief of the project was to create a design that encompassed all of Davis.

Process (Inspiration/Sketches):

Before starting this project, I first looked at bus schedules from previous years. I loved both designs so much and wanted to continue the idea of creating a graphic version of the city of Davis but in a different way. I decided that an isometric design would be really fun and push me to learn a new way of doing graphic design. I found a lot of inspiration online and from there, created rough sketches of how the piece would be laid out.

Rough Sketches

As I brought my idea into Illustrator, my goal for each of the blocks was to create a scene of different well-known areas in Davis: downtown and the farmers market, Memorial Union, The Silo, and one of the many apartment clusters. The street goes through each block to represent how Unitrans Buses travel all throughout Davis. As this was my first time attempting Isometric Design, I struggled a lot in the beginning to get a hang of this new style, but it was a really great design lesson for me to tackle this project. I played around with a few different color schemes but ultimately chose the light green color because I felt it aligned well with the colors used in the design and was different from the previous designs.
