Julius Caesar

Title:

Julius Caesar Set Design Model

Task/Context:

The goal for my final project in my set design class was to build a model for the play Julius Caesar but to create a modern representation (instead of the typical Roman Motifs). After reading the play, I had the idea to model the set after a playground while still leaving a few Roman elements as I found the characters of the play to be very childish in their political fights.

Tools:

Model Building Materials (foam core, balsa wood, clay)

Process:

While reading the play, I created a scene breakdown to help summarize what happened in each scene as well as noting the setting and any symbols I found significant. After, I created a moodboard and a cornell box to gather inspiration before sketching out the design. Once I drew out my ideas, I created a rough sketch of the floor plan on the stage and figured out the dimensions of the different elements in a 1/4 in scale. I started the model building process by making the actual stage out of foam core. Once I got the base finished, I created the rest of the set out of balsa wood and clay.
