Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night

Title:

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Set Design

Task/Project Brief:

This was one of my projects for my set design class. We were asked to read the script for the play Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. After, we each designed a set that would represent the story well as well as be functional between scenes of live acting. This project was definitely a challenge as it was my first time working in Sketch-up and because the play has 57 scenes with many different locations.

Tools:

Sketch-Up

Process:

Before starting the design aspect of the project, I read the play and created a scene breakdown to figure out specific descriptions of the different locations of the story. I also kept track of the events and characters in each scene to help with the planning of the set.

I knew I wanted to create a platform with a turntable mechanism to make use of all the space for the different settings. To get an idea of the various elements I would need, I created several mood boards to get the right architecture style and color schemes. From there, I created sketches to lay out where things would be placed.

In the actual design, I created a turntable with the front side being a facade of houses in London. When the turntable is flipped, there is a set of a house as well as the inside of the train. In order to combat the multiple settings that were back to back, I also created two additional panels beside the turntable. All the walls would be projected on in order to create different settings.
