Brief/Context:
This was a 10-week project for my Narrative Environments design class where we created an art installment/outdoor exhibit that is inspired by current social issues. I wanted to create a space that encourages visitors to share their experiences and stories with each other to create a community that is less hostile and more accepting of different identities, cultures, and races. I designed an interactive outdoor exhibit that is similar to mini libraries often set up around neighborhoods, where a book can taken in exchange for another book. The installment will be divided into three sections:
Display - Projects created outside of the installment can be displayed for a longer period of time, creating a gallery within the space
Create - Partipants will be encouraged to create art at the “Creation Station” and will be provided materials to use
Trade - Art created at the Creation Station can be posted on the trading walls, where participants can have conversations about the art on the wall as well as take one home. This trading should lend to an art installment that constantly changes. Participants will be encouraged to come back as many times as they wish and keep trading art pieces in order to continue hearing the stories of different individuals.
Tools:
Model Building Materials, Vectorworks, Twinmotion, Illustrator
Process:
This project was divided into three phases: design research, design development, and design visualization. In phase one, I gathered design inspiration, created a site plan, as well as persona studies to further understand the space I wanted to use. In the next phase, I explored structural styles, created concept maps, and a rough model. Finally in the last phase, I rendered multiple views of the installment as well as created a logo and color scheme for the project.
