Paul Rand Book Redesign
Title:
Design and the Play Instinct by Paul Rand - Book Design
Task:
Use the given words and pictures from the book Design and the Play Instinct by Paul Rand, and design a cover and layout, along with creating a final product that is printed and bound.
Tools:
Illustrator, InDesign
Process:
Before starting this book, I read through Design and the Play Instinct to look for inspiration for the cover and color scheme of the entire book. I also thought about what images the word “play” conjured in my mind. I did a few quick sketches of using the images from the book, but ultimately liked the idea of incorporating children’s play blocks. After getting some feedback from my professor, I decided that instead of illustrating actual play blocks, I would use it to influence my letterforms. In terms of color scheme, I originally started with a pastel selection but felt it was too “childish” for the genre of the book. Instead I settled on a color scheme that was more bold using warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow along with a navy blue to contrast.

Final Product:
After creating a cover that I was happy with, I moved onto the layout for the rest of the book. I used the color scheme to help build cohesion within the book in addition to placing shapes and drop shadows where I thought worked the best. Once the final layout was produced, I went back to make sure the text within the book was legible and had the right placement. From there, I printed out my pages and physically bound the book using the “Perfect Bind” method. Overall, I feel the project turned out really well as I was able to create a physical copy of the book and the theme is consistent throughout.
